New Course Record Set
Although a new course record was set, that's not the headline for some reason.
Pete Kostelnick of Lincoln, Neb., defended his title in the ultramarathon by shattering the course record by almost an hour with a time of 21:56:32.

10 Toughest Running Events in the World
One commenter said, "Humans are actually the best long distance runners on the planet, so other than our intelligence this is the best way for us humans to show off to the animal kingdom." It is my opinion that running a 135-mile race is not a sign of intelligence and that no intelligent being would do so by choice. Just saying...

sandman: Somewhere I read that the three most remarkable things about humans are our intelligence, our ability to make and use tools, and our ability to travel long distances on foot (aka, our endurance compared to most other animals). The irony is that we've gotten to be so good at making and using tools that remarkable thing number three is almost completely unnecessary anymore.
Would you walk a mile for me?

camel: If the process of evolution developed certain abilities in us humans, then we should probably use them. Failure to do so could be bad for both our physical and mental health. That's why walking is supposed to be one of the best forms of exercise that people can do. Exercising our intelligence is also important and that's something that many fail to do. Not that the results of the last election provide evidence for that or anything! LOL

Race might not be the best term. It's an endurance event and a spectacle. But I question the wisdom of this type of an activity.

Bakersfield man runs in Antarctica marathon
More or less the opposite kind of environment, but very harsh in its own way!
