TJUSD School Board Meeting - June 13, 2013

Postby blackturtle.us » Thu Jun 13, 2013 6:15 pm

The board meeting lasted just a little bit less than an hour today. It would have been even shorter if it weren't for a ten-minute punch and cookies break. The agenda had far fewer items than usual and so there's not a lot to report. The meeting was held in the high school auditorium and it was a little difficult to understand what was being said due to poor acoustics.

1. Closed Session - The board approved a contract with the Unrepresented Employees which includes a 5% raise (off-schedule, if I heard right) and a one-year increase in the benefits caps.

2. Mr. Olney gave out LOTS of volunteer certificates of recognition. He read off a few dozen names and those present received their certificate and a handshake from each member of the board and Mr. Olney. (Punch and cookies were served following this presentation.)

3. Superintendent's Report - Besides information on maintenance being done over the summer, the superintendent explained that Verizon is in the process of installing equipment that will deliver high speed internet to the district, which should be operational by July 1.

4. Public Comments - Ruthie Lancaster talked briefly about the Library/Swim program in which free swimming pool admission tickets are awarded to students for reading books.

5. Summer School - Summer session teaching assignments were approved. David Ok will teach at the elementary and Joseph Wolfe will teach at the high school. Jamie Gossett will work at the high school site as a paraprofessional.

6. 2013/2014 Budget - The board approved the budget for the 2013/2014 school year after Dawn McMillan presented a summary of projected expenditures and revenue covering the next three years.

Teacher Fired Because of Ex-Husband's Violent Criminal Past
Since this is a private church school they can probably get away with this kind of thing, but it seems like they are enabling the perpetrator to further victimize this poor woman the way I see things. And not only is this woman victimized, but so are her children. How a church school could act in such a despicable manner is hard to understand!

Philadelphia 'Can't Afford' Schools, Buys $400 Million Prison
The school to prison pipeline makes corporations rich. Corporations contribute funds to political candidates and so the government and corporations work together and against citizens. The result is that we have fewer freedoms in general and that opportunities are taken away from everyone.

Trona School Board thanks volunteers, discusses budget
The Daily Insufficient decided to do a fairly thorough article regarding the school board meeting for a change. Not that there was anything all that exciting to report on, but it's nice to see an article that actually spills over to a second page!
:sun:
On a final note, Olney said he was also excited about a recent “Verizon sighting.” Verizon Communications will be installing high-speed Internet access at all Trona schools, but there has been little word as to when the access will be in place. Olney said the sight of a Verizon truck in the area is a positive sign that the high-speed access is on the way soon, but he still is not sure exactly when.

That article was pretty good. But you're right about it being mostly content free. Someone is pretty good at writing about nothing, but at least they're paying more attention to Trona. And it's positive attention for a change and so I'm not going to complain!

Rap Helps Kids Learn and Keep Grades High
Some of the "raps" are a bit awkward and "lame" as the kids say, but this kind of competition would be a lot less boring than the traditional spelling bee. On top of that the ability to spell words correctly is trivial compared to the ability to develop a coherent set of lyrics which explain a complex science concept. So, yeah, hopefully this kind of competition does replace the traditional spelling bee!

Your kids' test scores tracked online
Data being collected on kids might be used against them in the future. How is the data protected? Just because the company SAYS it's private, doesn't MEAN that it will stay private. The company says it's just trying to help schools, but it's more likely that the company just wants to help itself!

Teaching kids coding after school
Great idea! The problem is that most teachers don't have the ability to teach this kind of stuff. Most people with the necessary skill set take jobs with tech companies that pay big bucks!
