TJUSD School Board Meeting - October 11, 2012

Postby blackturtle.us » Thu Oct 11, 2012 6:39 pm

The meeting this evening was fairly short with only a few items on the agenda. Highlights:

1. Public Comments
A. Curtis Bouteau (sp?) - Complimented the senior class on their behavior while they were out painting the T last week. A funeral was being conducted when they passed by the cemetery and they were very respectful according to Mr. Bouteau.
B. Sandy Sprouse - Asserted that students involved in the car rally last week were very well-behaved. Also mentioned a visit to Trona by Assemblyman Donnelly. Ms. Sprouse also made some comments regarding the selection of HS girls basketball coach. She stated that the coach from last year did a very good job and that that person should get the job back.
C. Vincent Thigpen - Stated that he was speaking on behalf of several members of the HS girls basketball team who were unable to attend the meeting. He stated that they all wanted the coach from last year to be their coach again this year.

2. Superintendent's Report - Enrollment down by eight students due to a single large family moving out of the area. Preliminary API scores were published this week. Trona Elementary received a score of 824. Superintendent Olney stated that anything above 800 is quite good. The HS improved from the previous year by 24 points to a score of 716. The superintendent also spoke about bus cameras. The plan is to equip two buses with cameras at a cost of about $5000. Another topic covered was Anti-Bullying programs. The superintendent listed some of the anti-bullying measures taken by the district including a couple ongoing programs and staff training.

3. Winter Coaching Assignments - The board voted 3-2 to approve coaching assignments for the basketball season. (Funke and Garrison voted against approval.)

4. Future meetings: October 29th - Special meeting to discuss teacher contract proposal. This item had been on the agenda for this meeting, but since the public had not been provided with a ten day period to review the proposal, the discussion and vote had to be postponed. November 8th - Regular board meeting.

Well at least progress is being made in the area of academics. Of course this is progress as measured by standardized test scores and so maybe it's not actually progress and only appears to be progress. Conforming to standards that don't actually measure academic progress should not be misconstrued as actual progress, IMHO.

This brings up an interesting philosophical question. Is it the job of teachers to do what is in the best interest of students or is it their job to follow the dictates of political leaders who are clueless when it comes to the proper education of children? If they want to keep their jobs they'd better do what their clueless leaders tell them to do, but teachers tend to be idealistic and so I would think they would find failing to provide children with a good education to be demoralizing.

7 Reasons High School ISN'T College!
Some of this "advice" is just superficial fashion pointers, but some of the advice is solid. I've heard so many stories of kids who get out of high school who are not psychologically ready for college. They don't have good study habits and they can't manage their time effectively or stay organized. The dropout rate is pretty high in college since many kids just can't handle the responsibility. The step from high school to college is pretty big and many kids just aren't prepared for that reality.

French President Wants To Ban Homework for "Equality"
This idea would probably be popular with most school kids. There might be a few who would be disappointed, but most would rejoyce! As for parents who insist on homework, there are so many websites offering academic activities that I'm not sure why they would care.

What color were they painting it? Brown or white? From far away it looks like the bottom of the T is fading out but when I climbed up there last week, it was obvious that somebody had painted over the white with brown paint. What is that all about?

The superintendent (David Olney) accompanied the seniors on either the T lighting or the T painting (or both) and he said nothing about brown paint. It seems like it would be a major pain to lug enough brown paint up to the T to paint over all the white. Maybe brown paint was used to cover up areas where white paint had been placed outside the lines (so to speak).

SURFSTEVE: Interesting video. I've never seen the T from so close. It looks alright from a distance. If someone wanted to mess it up they'd need shovels or crowbars and be willing to put in a few hours of work. No one hates Trona that much! It's easier just to leave. Maybe fixing the T would be a good job for the T Party.

Look at it again. From a distance the bottom of the T looks washed out. But what looks like fading white paint is actually brown paint that was painted over it.The T is not fading. It's caused from brown paint! What is this T party you are talking about?
