TJUSD Board Meeting - October 08, 2015

Postby blackturtle.us » Fri Oct 09, 2015 9:42 am

The meeting lasted about forty minutes. One family stayed until student awards were given out. Also a student was present long enough to deliver a brief report to the board. Otherwise everyone present was either a school employee or a board member.

Student Representative - Mostly provided information about Homecoming Week activities.

Board Member Comments - Topics mentioned by the five board members included the Powder Puff game, Homecoming Week, car rally safety, the recent Trona Care community clean up, work being done to spruce up the bike path, etc.

Parent Project - Ruth Soto provided a brief update on the Parent Project. A total of twenty-four parents are currently enrolled in the program.

Superintendent - Shared information about the State of the County meeting he recently attended and also talked a little about his general philosophy and hopes for the school district. This was Keith Tomes’ first regular school board meeting as superintendent.

Elementary Update - Principal Alan Tsubota provided information about the following items: Common Core Parent Workshop, Sixth Grade Science Camp fundraisers, upcoming staff development activities, a disaster drill scheduled for October 15, an AVID site visitation set for October 19, and an awards assembly to be held October 26.

Community Comments - A school employee informed the board about unfair aspects of the way that employees are reimbursed for meal expenses while on trips. She asked for the board to review relevant board policies and to take steps to ensure that the policies are both fair and enacted in a fair manner.

Other items: A new substitute teacher was approved, paperwork was approved to officially grant the new superintendent the authority to act on behalf of the school district, and an overnight activity in the HS gym was approved.

NEXT REGULAR BOARD MEETING: November 12, 2015

FBI uses ISIS recruitment tactic in Pennsylvania
This lady makes this sound like a bad thing, but these kids are going to learn some useful skills and get a job that pays well. So, I really don't see a problem here. I think most kids would consider this an awesome opportunity.

Adults Take 8th Grade Common Core Math Test
People forget their math skills pretty quickly if they don't use them. This is especially true for equations such as the one for a volume of a cylinder as seen in this news clip!

Father claims daughter tricked into attending prayer meeting at her school
This type of predatory behavior should not be tolerated in a public school setting. Schools should not facilitate religious indoctrination and when deception is used to trick kids into attending a religious meeting on school grounds legal action should be taken against all those involved.

Why Do Kids Learn Faster Than Adults?
Everyone knows that kids can pick up languages faster than adults and they learn other things more quickly too. This clip contains some conjectures as to why this is the case.

What Is The Future Of Language?
Your kid may be able to learn a language more quickly than an adult, but what language should your kid learn? Currently there are something like 7000 languages, but twelve languages are much more widely spoken than all the rest. The long term prediction is for most of those languages to die out. But the question is which language(s) will still be in use in say a century or so...

Sure kids learn languages faster than adults, but kids in Trona have almost no opportunity to learn languages. I understand that the high school only offers one language. It seems that language courses would be one of the easiest subjects to offer in an online format, which would make it possible for students to learn any language out there practically. It really doesn't make sense to force all kids to learn the same language. The school should allow students more options.

Family of High School Football Player Files Lawsuit
My prediction is that high school football as we now know it will be a thing of the past within ten years because of liability issues and the inevitable lawsuits which will be filed with greater and greater frequency in upcoming years.

BallaratBob: I hope you're wrong, but if the you-can-never-be-too-safe crowd gets its way, then most likely your prediction will prove to be extremely accurate. It's sad that that's the way things are headed here in America, but with all the red tape and regulation everything we used to be able to take for granted is being taken away.

PC School District Bans Halloween! (WAR ON HALLOWEEN!)
It seems a little extreme and anti-fun to ban a holiday and of all the holidays Halloween is one of the funnest. It's a cultural tradition rich in meaning and history. Why deprive children of the experience?
