TJUSD Board Meeting - November 12, 2015

Postby blackturtle.us » Fri Nov 13, 2015 8:48 am

The meeting this evening lasted about forty minutes. Several community members were present, mostly parents of students receiving Student of the Month awards. The following are meeting highlights from my point of view:

1) Superintendent - Keith Tomes shared information with the school board about an interesting court case pertaining to employee unions, the state budget, and ways the district will improve its use of technology. Regarding the state budget he said that the state is in the process of repaying schools for money borrowed from the education budget during the recession. He cautioned that the current increases in funding seen in education are likely to only be temporary.
2) Elementary Report - Eighty-four percent of parents attended recent parent conferences.
3) Public Comments - Football coach Curtis Boutte thanked local companies for donations to support the high school football team. He also expressed some disappointment that despite a 9-1 win/loss record and advancement to second round of CIF playoffs, that the community does not seem to be showing what he sees as a lot of enthusiasm and support for the football program.
4) Winter Coaches - Positions for basketball season approved with a 4-0 vote.
5) Substitute Teacher - A retired teacher returning as a substitute teacher approved 3-1.
6) Retirement - Current Maintenance/Operations/Transportation (MOT) Foreman retiring effective December 31.
7) New MOT Foreman approved with a 4-0 vote.
8) Service Credit Cost - Mr. Tomes explained retirement incentives being offered to three senior employees. Basically the incentives offered must be less than the amount saved by the district as a result of the retirements. Since new employees come in at a lower point on the pay scale, the district saves a substantial amount of money. This savings justifies the use of retirement incentives and is a requirement for the incentives to be approved by at the county level.
9) Unsatisfactory Behavior - A board member asked that a discussion be held at a future board meeting regarding “U” behavior grades. She feels that a clear policy regarding these grades needs to be considered.
10) California School Board Association Conference - Three board members and the superintendent will be attending a conference in San Diego.
11) Next Regular School Board Meeting: December 10, 2015.

Parents Notified Of Gay Character In Children's Book
All three of the people in this discussion are obviously liberals who have predominantly liberal friends. They need to spend some time in a conservative community so that they can understand that not everyone is as tolerant as them. If the school administrators had failed to warn the community, there most likely would have been hell to pay and so these three libs need to get in touch with reality and come to the realization that not everyone drinks their favorite flavor of koolaid!

County's "top" schools not in affordable areas
It's the quality of the students at the schools that makes all the difference. Studies have shown that teachers don't work harder at high achieving schools. There isn't more money spent at those schools either. The key difference is that if you have intelligent kids, raised by responsible and highly educated parents, then the schools where those kids go are going to produce high-achieving students. All the remedial programs, after school tutoring, enrichment programs, and wishful thinking in the world can't bridge the intelligence gap. It just ain't happening. Sorry folks. Only in fairy tales (and Hollywood movies).

Kid Gives Hilariously Snarky Answer On Homework
This is pretty funny and it's good to see that the teacher also had a good sense of humor!

Teacher starts each day with compliments for every kid
It would be annoying to have a teacher like this. After awhile too many compliments kind of makes the compliments meaningless. Kind of a dumbass approach to trying to build the kids' self-esteem.

I don't see an issue with a book featuring gay characters being available in the schools to students. I don't even see a need to inform parents since gay people are in the real world and people have a legal right to be gay if that's their thing. Just the same, in certain school districts where the community may be composed of intolerant individuals, it might be best to inform parents since otherwise there might be some kind of protest at the next board meeting, if not sooner. Lots of people live in the past and they get mad when anyone reminds them that they are behind the times.

Study: Teachers Are VERY Underpaid
Most people don't need a study to tell them what they already know, but it doesn't hurt to double-check to make sure you have the facts straight. The most interesting point made in this video debunks the notion that teacher unions are powerful since if they were why would teachers be so underpaid? Republicans all the time complain about teacher unions, but back police unions.

Claim filed in school board controversy
It's common for school board members to get favors and many of them expect special treatment for themselves and family members. School board members who push too far can get themselves and their school district into the kind of trouble that can add up to big bucks.
