TJUSD Board Meeting - August 11, 2016

Postby blackturtle.us » Fri Aug 12, 2016 8:21 am

The meeting tonight lasted only a half hour. Only three people were in the audience and they were all school employees. Board Member Samantha MacLean was not present. There wasn't much to this meeting, but here are the highlights from my point of view:

1) Superintendent's Report:
a) Outlined schedule for teacher prep week including an extra day added on Tuesday to accommodate training needs for new equipment and programs.
b) onPoint (the company installing short-throw, whiteboard, projection devices in classrooms) is donating a projection unit for the school board meeting room.
c) iPads for board members - The plan is to issue iPads to board members and for documents to be shared with board electronically instead of being printed out.
2) High School Principal: Talked about improving communication and asked the board if posting announcements on Facebook was an effective way of communicating from their point of view. The board seemed to like the idea.
3) Teeshirts - A total of 106 teeshirts with school logos have been ordered for the elementary and high school. (This turned out to be the longest discussion of the evening.) The main concerns were cost and the logos. First of all, the total cost for the order was $4100 minus 15% ($615) for a cost of about $33 per shirt. Some board members thought this was a little high and the explanation had to do with logos, which gets us to the second concern. Since the elementary mascot is a roadrunner and the high school mascot is a tornado, different logos were ordered for each site. This turned into a discussion about the history of mascots in TJUSD. Sandy Sprouse stated that the original mascot for the high school was a tiger, but at some point that got changed to a tornado. Also it was mentioned that the mascot for the elementary may have been a twister (small tornado) at some point, but for some reason it was changed to a roadrunner. No one was sure when any of this happened, but there was some uncertainty about the roadrunner logo and whether elementary staff would prefer a shirt with a tornado or a roadrunner.
4) Business items regarding the 2016-2017 budget and LCAP passed (4-0) without discussion.
5) Policies and Procedures item regarding revision of Board Policy 9250 (Remuneration, Reimbursement, and Other Benefits) was tabled without explanation.

School mascots should at least have something to do with the location of the school and so roadrunner is a good mascot for the elementary, but the tornado thing is kind of random. Maybe tarantulas would work better. We might see a small mini-tornado (aka, twister) once a decade and dust devils every once in a while, but full blown tornados? Never. Tarantulas, tortoises, roadrunners, coyotes, heat, cactus, and other things you find in the desert all make sense.

panamint_patty: Taking your idea and running with it, maybe the elementary mascot should remain the roadrunner and the high school mascot be changed to the coyote. Seems to me that the wily coyote would make a great and inspirational mascot and on top of that the roadrunner and coyote comprise a rather famous duo. Not exactly a dynamic duo, but an established duo, nonetheless!

cactuspete: If the elementary mascot is a roadrunner and the high school mascot is a coyote, then maybe this would make a great alma mater...

Teacher Dives out of Window!
The most amazing thing about this video is how well-behaved the students are. Only one even gets out of his seat!

shadylady: Very few comportment issues in that class. I wonder if it has something to do with white privilege (e.g., having parents who expect you to behave while at school... or else!).

Laundry access at school boosts attendance
There is no end to services which schools could offer to support those in need or to make the lives of everyone more convenient. The question is where do you draw the line. Schools could have a medical staff, dental staff, psychological staff, after school daycare, legal staff, emergency food pantry, laundromat, etc. All these services could be offered to families with children who attend the school and there might be advantageous to offering all these things, but the cost would be prohibitive and ultimately it's everyone else who winds up paying for it.

wildrose: There's a tendency for the nanny state to provide everything for everybody, but there's always a cost and I don't just mean in the form of increased taxes. Usually there's a loss of freedom with every service provided by the gubbermint!

mrfish and wildrose: You know darn well that people on welfare are all excited and hopeful over a news clip that promises that they can get something for nothing. In general it's probably not a great idea to invite unemployed people or people with a criminal record onto a public school campus. The potential for a negative outcome is way too high.

Re: School Year Starting

What I hear is that the first day of school is Monday, August 22. It seems that school starts awfully early nowadays. I always thought it was more like really late August or early September when I was going to school. Taking into consideration the heat in the northern Mojave, it seems like waiting would be better!
