TJUSD Board Meeting - December 13, 2016

Postby blackturtle.us » Wed Dec 14, 2016 8:52 am

This board meeting lasted about an hour. Only one non-employee stayed for the entire meeting. Other than that a student and her parents stayed until the monthly student awards were presented. There weren't many highlights to this meeting, but here is what I got this time around:

1) Oaths of Office for newly re-elected board members: Sandra Sprouse and Samantha MacLean. Also board selected officers and meeting time, which will stay the same this year as it was last year.

2) TTA President - Briefly updated the board on payroll issues and mentioned that the District Financial Officer will be presenting workshops for staff in January to help them to interpret their pay stubs so that each employee can verify that he or she is being properly paid.

3) Superintendent's Report - Dr. Tomes talked a little about a conference he and a board member attended during November. Interesting information was gained regarding LCAP (Local Control and Accountability Plan) and facilities. Also their flight home had to be diverted from Ontario to LAX due to high winds, which caused quite an inconvenience for them. Additionally, the superintendent and HS principal may be making a presentation at an upcoming educational conference on the topic of PLCs (Professional Learning Communities) from the perspective of a small school.

4) A number of substitute personnel were approved by the board.

5) First Interim Business Report - This was approved after some discussion. A question came up regarding information presented by the TTA president regarding payroll. Basically, the question was If we are having payroll issues, how can we approve the first interim report? The superintendent answered the question and his answer (basically, the district is in good financial shape and that the payroll issue is not the result of lack of funds) was sufficient to persuade the board that approval of the report was not an issue.

6) Proposition 39 Energy Conservation Project - A company called IES was approved by the board to provide services regarding this project.

NEXT Regular Meeting: January 12, 2016

California Wants Control Of All Children
This is interesting and it may be cause for alarm. On the other hand, it might just be InfoWars over-reacting as they tend to do a lot of the time.

twister: That classroom looks like a wonderful place. It is definitely set up to meet the needs of children and that's what should count. Unfortunately, our schools are forced to care more about test scores than children and we all know that test scores are all about making money for publishing companies. So, don't expect to see many schools emulate what we see in the video you posted.

This guy shares his first experience with working with middle school kids. It was a little awkward, but not traumatic.

Does Your School Matter?
Being a big fish in a little pond during high school might boost your confidence, but could it set you up for failure when you go away to college?

Why Foreign Students Are Crowding Out American College Kids
Competition for spots at the top universities is increasing thanks to increasing numbers of foreign students. Our schools are the best on the planet and so our students better work harder to make sure that they can compete. The TYT people claim it's all about the money, but the reality is that it's about accepting the most qualified students and that's especially true when it comes to minority students, unfortunately. Students here in the USA need to take responsibility for their own lack of achievement since everyone else is bending over backwards to give them everything they need to succeed.

shadylady: It's too bad that TYT didn't focus on the real problem, which is that despite all the opportunities available to our students, very few take advantage of what is available to them. Whether it's bad parenting or a culture which does not sufficiently value education, students in the USA have more opportunity than in any other country and yet they perform relatively poorly. Like you say, we (speaking as a retired teacher) bend over backwards to provide them with all the advantages, but they just don't seem to care. As the Millennials have experienced, failure to take advantage of educational opportunities translates into being unqualified for available jobs which equates to a pretty miserable adulthood.

School bus driver falls asleep at the wheel, nearly crashes
I thought there was a product called DayQuil. This report says the driver took NyQuil and methadone before reporting for work. Luckily no one was hurt.
