wildrose: Educational policy at the federal and state level does not seem to be very well thought out for the most part. There seems to be a basic disconnect with reality. Political leaders often make decisions regarding issues they don't actually understand and then blame any problems on those in the trenches when things don't work out. Bad policy always leads to failure no matter how hard the workers work. It's amazing that our educational system works as well as it does considering the dysfunction at the state and federal level.

ergot: Governmental bureaucracy is half the problem. The other half are companies that sell educational materials whether it be books or tests or software or what have you. Our system and our culture undermines the efforts of those who wish to provide a good educational experience to all students. It's not inherent to our form of government or our economic system or even to the way bureaucracies work. It has something to do with what we value as a society and the types of behaviors, abilities, and skills which we reward. It will take some real soul searching in order to fix the problems and I'm not talking about the kind of soul searching which leads to half-witted handouts and social justice false solutions.
