TJUSD BOARD MEETING - July 09, 2020

Postby blackturtle.us » Thu Jul 09, 2020 5:15 pm

The board meeting started on time and right away six people were watching the meeting live. The number was up to ten after a few minutes. At a half hour into the meeting thirteen people were watching the meeting live. The meeting lasted just under forty minutes total.

HIGHLIGHTS:
1) TTA Report - Concerned about COVID-19 issues and hybrid model for school year proposed.
2) Superintendent's Report - Comments regarding preparations being made for upcoming school year.
3) Maintenance Report - Brief comments about preparations underway for upcoming school year.
4) Principal's Report - Talked about plan for reopening school in August. Many details covered, but also stated that CDC is publishing revised guidelines for reopening schools next week. He presented ideas for a "blended approach" where Pioneer Point students attend classes in person two days a week and the rest of the town will attend classes on two different days in order to keep number of students in classroom simultaneously to a minimum. The fifth day will be distance learning for all. Daily attendance required. Lunch and breakfast still provided by school, but only lunch will be eaten while at school. An independent study program will also be available and so far several families have indicated a preference for that choice. According to principal, blended approach allows district to transition to regular or distance learning easily. All CDC guidelines will be followed. The temperature of all students will be checked upon arrival at school.
5) HS Graduation - Still planned for end of July. Each family will have eight members allowed to come on their behalf. At this time the plan is to hold the ceremony in the gym. The baccalaureate will be held in the cafeteria in the B-wing.
6) One personnel item was tabled before the meeting. Several business items were approved with a minimum of discussion and only brief explanations.
NEXT REGULAR MEETING: August 13
WORKSHOP: August 5, tentative depending on availability of presenter.

Dr. Gupta demonstrates how schools could reopen safely
A lot of unanswered questions and different people have different opinions about what should be done.

So you're saying that the kids from the "good" side of town will all attend school two days a week and the kids on the "bad" side of town will attend on two different days per week. In other words, the "good" kids will be kept separate from the "bad" kids. Isn't there a word for that? Let's see here.... I do believe it's....

Dr. Sanjay Gupta: What we really know about kids and Covid-19
Thanks to all the travel over the July 4th weekend there will almost certainly be a surge in cases during the upcoming week and a surge of deaths a week or two later. At this time we actually know very little about how the virus affects kids because since March they have not attended school. When school opens back up and if kids are attending another surge is almost certain. The estimated effect of closing schools proposed in this video is absurdly small. Schools are basically germ factories. Open them back up and the numbers will go through the roof! (And so might lawsuits against schools as a result.)

SEGREGATION

As long as it's not segregation by race, I don't think the school district would be in trouble and in order to figure that one out we'd have to see a breakdown of the demographics for the different sections of town. My guess is that racially speaking the distribution of different racial groups is about even throughout the different parts of town. However, I'm sure that household income would show a clear disparity. We all know that academic achievement is highly correlated with household income and so what you would have as a result is some form of both academic and socioeconomic segregation. Probably not a legal problem under the circumstances, but I could see more than a few parents not being too happy about it.

Last Tuesday MojaveMike posted the following to the TJUSD BOARD MEETING thread for June:
MojaveMike wrote:Harvard and most other major universities have decided to hold classes online for the 2020-2021 school year. They will not be conducting in person classes. College students are perfectly capable of maintaining social distancing and wearing masks and following any and all protocol intended to limit the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The same cannot be said of children attending elementary school. Public schools are like germ factories or incubators for the spread of infection. As long as universities are closed, then public schools (especially elementary schools) should be closed! Kids won't follow protocol. They touch each other and their masks will slide off. It's a recipe for disaster!

Here is a list of the 64 academic institutions planning to shift to online learning as of Tuesday:
https://www.foxnews.com/us/which-colleges-have-committed-to-online-learning-for-fall-2020
One thing I know is that this list is far from complete. I have friends with kids in college who will be "attending" class online who's colleges aren't on the list.

Is it safe to reopen schools as coronavirus cases surge?
The answer is that it is definitely not safe, but the question should be:
How risky is it?
There definitely is a risk and the risk is fairly high and so the next question should be:
Is reopening schools worth the risk?
The most reasonable answer to that question would be:
Probably not.

Nancy DeVos Has No Clue What She's Talking About
Distance learning has never been given a fair chance. In California teachers were not allowed to grade school work. All work done after the school closure was more or less just extra credit. It should be no surprise that most students didn't care about extra credit. To give distance learning a fair chance students must be held accountable. So far that has never been done and so the claims made by DeVos are without any basis in reality. She's pushing an agenda without any justification based on factual evidence.

wildrose: Not surprising that Nancy DeVos is clueless. It's no secret that she's a mindless nitwit.
