Companies get noticed by doing something that can be seen as innovative, progressive, or just different. I'm sure WalMart just wants to boost its image as a company that is socially responsible. Along the way it may be able to create a subsidary that makes plastic bags which are believed to be more environmentally friendly and thereby make a lot of money in the process. It's not likely that the new bags are any better than the old bags, but it's easy for a powerful company like WalMart to create the public perception that this is indeed the case.

panamint_patty: Yep! It's all about public perception and if the truth be known the bags probably have few if any advantages over the bags we've been using for years. On top of that there are probably some disadvantages that we won't find out about for months. But perception is more important than reality and so it doesn't really make much difference when all is said and done!

deathvalleyjake: In the short run perception might be more important than reality, but in many cases reality ultimately wins out, especially in cases where the perception masks a dangerous reality. But in a world where perception is everything and the media machine routinely does everything it can to build false perceptions, it really does seem to be all about perception. When the bubble bursts sometimes it spells disaster and sometimes it's just one of those moments of clarity where all of a sudden we realize what was going on behind the scenes all along.

CoolChick: Some of those solutions sound like they might be even worse than the problem. We humans seem to have a tendency to get ourselves into jams which have no easy solutions and which just keep getting worse and worse. Recycling is the best solution, but it's difficult to get the full participation of everyone.

Full Participation: You're never going to get full participation unless you mandate that everyone participate and the minute you do that you'll get tons of complaints about environazis and that sort of thing. Most people don't have enough commonsense to know what they should do and so we wind up with laws compelling us to do what we should be doing anyways. Most people tend to rebel when they feel forced to do something and so problems don't get solved, they just become more complicated.

So far so good! We still have plastic bags! It's a triumph of democracy as far as I'm concerned. I haven't heard anything new about the environazis trying to ban the bags and so hopefully we've made it through this potential crisis.

Huge hole in Del Mar's plastic bag ban proposal
This is the first I've heard of a statewide vote, but at the end of this news clip they mention that California voters will decide the fate of the plastic bag in November 2016.

The biggest environmental problem you’ve never heard of
Plastic bags aren't that big of a deal. It's the plastic that gets into the ocean that people should worry about.
