The excuse is climate change. The actual reason is irresponsible forest management policies. Put substantial effort into brush removal, clearing of downed trees, and the construction of firebreaks, and maybe a few more similar things and fires will be contained quickly. The big payoff will be cleaner air. Lots of people have breathing issues and poor air quality causes these people to suffer UNNECESSARILY. Put as much money into prevention of forest fires as is spent on fighting forest fires and after five to ten years the amount spent on fighting them will drop considerably! It will take time to make up for decades of failure to deal with the issue.

BoraxBill: I agree that bad forest management is the main issue here. Back in the 1950s through the 1970s efforts to clear out dried brush and dead trees were reliable and consistent. The ball was dropped in order to save money and now it's been decades of irresponsible forest management efforts and we are now paying the price. Climate change might be about ten percent of the issue, but mostly and by far it's a failure to properly manage forest areas.

Decades of negligence is how we got here. I'm willing to bet that the amount it would have cost for four decades of proper forest management would be less than the amount it has cost for the last two years of fire fighting. The people running this state need to get their heads out of each other's backsides and start acting like responsible leaders for a change!

The morons in charge are short-sighted and they have their priorities completely wrong. Rather than wasting money taking care of the irresponsible and on exaggerated fantasy social issues, spend money in a way which benefits everybody. Reality comes back to bite you when you lose touch and that's basically where we're at now. The problem is that it's responsible people who pay for the mistakes made by the morons in charge!
