NSA Fallout: Encrypted Email Services Shutting Down
Looks like the goon squad is shutting down services which provide truly free speech. It's Nazi Germany all over again folks! When the guy at Lavabit can't even talk about the legal situation which forced him to shut down his service, then free speech has been disposed of. Sure it still seems like we have free speech in everyday life, but when the rubber hits the road, if you say something they don't want you to say, you will be dealt with rather severely.

Darknet (file sharing)
The government wants to shut down free speech and part of what they need to do in order to achieve this goal is to shut down the so-called Darknet.
A darknet is an anonymizing network where connections are made only between trusted peers — sometimes called "friends" (F2F) — using non-standard protocols and ports. Darknets are distinct from other distributed P2P networks as sharing is anonymous (that is, IP addresses are not publicly shared), and therefore users can communicate with little fear of governmental or corporate interference

Dark Net 101
The powers that be wish to exercise absolute control over the populace and this type of system undermines their ability to do this.
Think of Dark Net as a separate internet . To access Dark Net you need to have access to the regular internet and connect to the Tor network. Tor is a network of virtual tunnels that allows people and groups to improve their privacy and security on the Internet (definition from torproject.org) . You can use the Tor network to surf the real internet anonymously, which helps if you live under tyranny.

You make an excellent point. We are free to talk about trivial things which do not threaten the power structure, but cross the line and see what happens! The people of the old USSR enjoyed exactly the same free speech rights which we now have. It seems that rather than providing an example of freedom for the rest of the world to follow, we have decided to follow the example set by the USSR (which we used to describe as a repressive regime). Oh, the irony!!!

BTW, interesting topic. The connection between this "Dark Web" and NSA spying is pretty interesting. It would seem that the most patriotic thing a person could do would be to support the "Dark Web" in any way possible.

This kind of thing is why the media hits with so much propaganda about the supposed dangers of the web. Cybercrime, hacking, cyberbullying, etc. are all blown way out of proportion to scare citizens into supporting measures which result in the destruction of free speech and other basic rights. I don't think the comparison to Nazi Germany is inappropriate either. It's important to assert our rights because once they take a little, they'll take more and that's exactly how the ball got rolling in pre-WWII Germany.

The Dangerous Websites Google Hides From You
If you're into this kind of thing be careful because there are feds everywhere. If you don't do things correctly they can trace you down. It's not as simple as installing Tor and then just browsing around and downloading stuff. Make sure you know what you're doing before you do anything that might get you in trouble!

Why is there an onion on the Tor website? Are they related to The Onion? Not that it really matters because I have a hard time taking security advise from someone using windows on their computer anyway.
Make Trona great again!
