There's no doubt that it's a waste of money to be spending time on something as trivial as texting. If law enforcement actually performs necessary duties those duties should take priority over something like this. The fact that this kind of thing gets taken seriously makes me think that perhaps too many officers are doing way too little. Save us all some money and lay off unnecessary officers if this is all they have to do!

I like the idea of a MILLION SEXT SIEGE. It would be an effective form of civil disobedience and would quite clearly bring attention to the way that law enforcement has wormed its way into our private lives. What images people trade on their phones is absolutely not the business of law enforcement. No way! No how! It's the job of parents to deal with teens on trivial matters like this. We need to limit the powers of law enforcement to meddle in affairs such as this.

There are MILLIONS of illegal aliens in our country and time is being wasted on people sharing images? Seriously? Leave the people sharing images alone and go after people who enter our country illegally! Why is it that one class of people (who aren't even citizens) can get away with breaking major laws, while others (who are citizens) get persecuted for trivial offenses? Respect the privacy of citizens and kick illegals out of the country! We need law and order, not harassment of citizens and special privileges for non-citizens!

Teen Girl Charged With Child Porn For Selling Nude Images of Herself
A couple years ago in a sociology class the professor shared some stats which indicate that this sort of thing is fairly common. Not prevalent. Just common. Children sometimes make money by "exploiting" themselves in this manner. As pointed out in this video, the law is meant to protect children form adults, not to further victimize children. Also pointed out in this video is the idea that it is never a good idea for parents to use the police to teach children a lesson since more often than not the police will just make a bad situation much worse.

Stepdad Goes To Police With Stepdaughter's Sexts, Asks Them To Intervene, Is Prosecuted For Child Porn
More craziness from the No Nudity Nazis. People need to reach a level of maturity where they no longer react emotionally to nude pics. Laws should not exist regarding this sort of thing. It's a personal thing. Not something that law enforcement should be involved in.
The fact that sexualized pictures of "children" (anyone under 18 qualifies in federal child porn statues) are rampant and often consensual should somehow be reflected in the laws. Instead, low-level sex offenses are becoming the low-level drug offenses of this century: Something we overreact to in a charade of concern and, in the process, turn decent people into criminals.

BTW, here's a pretty good comment and reply:
COMMENT ONE: The dad is a moron. He should have taken the cellphone to the police. The minute he downloaded the content, he became a contributor of child porn. What an idiot.

REPLY: As soon as he downloaded the content he became a contributor of child porn? I'm not so sure about that. Case in point: just because you left a comment here doesn't mean you contributed to the conversation.

mrgreen: Excellent article! I like the phrase 'charade of concern' when discussing the overreaction to sexts. Intelligent people would simply roll their eyes and dismiss it all as teenagers being silly, but unfortunately the world is not populated for the most part by intelligent people. Intelligence is the exception, not the rule.

mrgreen: Low-level sex offenses should not even be crimes. It's all governmental over-reach. The government should not regulate private affairs at all.

shadylady: Yes, I like that phrase too. This is all empty and pointless drama. Pictures are just pictures. It's not a matter warranting the involvement of law enforcement at all.
