What you can do to prevent Alzheimer's | Lisa Genova
There are many lifestyle choices which may help prevent Alzheimer's disease, but maintaining neural plasticity and cognitive reserve might be the most effective way of preventing the disease.

Preventing Alzheimer’s with Lifestyle Changes
This is an important topic. Most of us know at least one person who has been affected, directly or indirectly, by some sort of neurodegenerative disease.

The coming neurological epidemic - Gregory Petsko
This could be a huge drain on the economy in upcoming decades. Hopefully medical science will improve the situation, but if not this could be a disaster.

The Coming Epidemic of Neurodegenerative Diseases | Gregory Petsko | TEDxCornellCollege
This will be a crisis unless a cure is found. We are running out of time. Without a cure this will turn into a disaster.

Alzheimer’s Is Not Normal Aging — And We Can Cure It | Samuel Cohen | TED Talks
This is a rather urgent situation. The demographic changes in the world population discussed in the other videos are interesting, but the economic implications are a huge concern, especially if half of people over eighty suffer from some sort of cognitive impairment.

The same foods that cause the plaque in Alzheimer's also cause heart disease, plaque in the arteries and plaque on the teeth. Sugar and cereal grains, especially wheat are the main culprits and should be replaced by raw fruits and vegetables. Healthy and unheated fats feed the brain and are high in fat soluble vitamins. Low fat diet and fear of cholesterol is responsible for much of the health problems we have today. The brain is made of mostly cholesterol. Only when cholesterol is oxidized does it turn into plaque!

The proof that cholesterol does not cause plaque is that plaque is only found in arteries and never in veins. Veins lack oxygen and is the reason they are blue. Arteries supply oxygen to the cells and is the free radicals in the oxygen that are the source of oxidizing cholesterol that is not protected by antioxidants. You can not live without cholesterol. It makes no sense to avoid cholesterol and every bit of sense to protect it by avoiding foods with free radicals from sources like sugar and cereal grains and consuming plenty of foods high in antioxidants such as fresh fruits and vegetables.

Proof Cholesterol (LDL) Doesn't Cause Plaque In Arteries
LDL carries cholesterol to where the body needs it. Cholesterol is used by the body to make hormones, cell membranes, and even brain tissue. So LDL is not bad as medical propaganda claims. It's free radicals that are bad because free radicals oxidize LDL which turns LDL into oxidized LDL. It's oxidized LDL, not LDL, that causes plaque building in arteries and clogs arteries. HDL is not oxidized by free radicals because it contains an antioxidant (paraoxonase). Antioxidants neutralize free radicals.

FREE RADICAL THEORY OF AGING: DEBUNKED SEVERAL YEARS AGO. ANTI-OXIDANTS NOT AS IMPORTANT AS MADE OUT TO BE. SUGAR PROBABLY NOT GOOD IN EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS, BUT NOT NEARLY AS BAD AS SATURATED FAT.

Harvard researchers unveil new Alzheimer's theory
This article presents an interesting theory regarding how Alzeimer's develops.

surfsteve and desertrat: My understanding is that the free radical fad is over and that too much sugar is bad, but not as big a deal as the free radical herd would have you believe. I agree that too much saturated and denatured fat is very unhealthy and probably directly implicated in many age-related degenerative diseases.
That doesn’t mean Alzheimer’s is contagious, but that some people’s brains may over-react to or get overwhelmed by a variety of pathogens, including chlamydia, herpes and the bacteria that causes Lyme disease, Tanzi said. It’s possible that younger people’s brains can handle such issues, but some older ones can’t.

Studies on saturated fat are flawed because there is no distinction between artificially processed, hydrogenated saturated fats and those that are not. I'm not married to the free radical theory but I do believe in prevention of plaque buildup and a lot of the foods that help prevent it also happen to be high in antioxidants and a lot of the foods that cause it are not. Chances are if you got plaque on your teeth you got plaque in your heart, plaque in your arteries and plaque in your brain. The plaque build up on your teeth is a good indicator much like a canary in a coal mine. If you can prevent it from building up on your teeth without resorting to mechanically scraping it off or dangerous fluoride treatments the chances are you wont have to worry about it in the rest of your body. In places like your joints its' not called plaque but it's pretty much the same thing. Much of this is blamed on autoimmune diseases but just like there are no pathogens that cause attention deficit disorders there are none that cause auto immune diseases. They are caused by something else most likely in the diet or the environment. Anything that helps take calcium from where it doesn't belong and puts it where it does will be a big help and no bias studies funded by anyone with special interests is going to change reality anymore than a placebo.
