The evolution of popular music: USA 1960–2010
This is an interesting article which analyzed pop music trends over the last fifty years. Two findings might be considered surprising or controversial. First of all there's the conclusion that hip hop or rap music has been the most influential musical innovation of the last half century and then there's this:
The British did not start the American revolution of 1964
Together, these results suggest that, even if the British did not initiate the American revolution of 1964, they did exploit it and, to the degree that they were imitated by other artists, fanned its flames. Indeed, the extraordinary success of these two groups—66 Hot 100 hits between them prior to 1968—may be attributable to their having done so.

The guys who conducted the study suggest that the Beatles and the Stones were simply ahead of the curve, but that the trend they were riding was started before they hit the scene. Ultimately the whole study strikes me as pseudo-scientific in that the assumptions and prejudices of the researchers seems to be hidden behind layers of statistical analysis and computational smoke and mirrors. This seems to be a simple case of garbage in garbage out, but it is interesting and thought-provoking nonetheless.

The Rolling Stones kick off tour at Petco Park
The exact date that the Rolling Stones formed I'm not sure about, but it's been more or less fifty years. :thumb:

BTW, "Petco Park" is a really stupid name for a stadium IMHO. :mad2:

Carlos Santana practices anthem before Warriors-Cavaliers Game 2
Does anyone remember when "Black Magic Woman" was released? What famous band recorded "Black Magic Woman" before Santana?

Deep Purple's Ian Paice on Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction: 'At Last!'
I didn't realize that they weren't already in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It seems like a no-brainer that they would have been in decades ago.
I see the list of members that are getting in here. It's Ritchie Blackmore, David Coverdale, Rod Evans, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Glenn Hughes, Jon Lord and you. Do you think that makes sense to bring in those people?

So does anyone have a list of the members of Deep Purple who weren't inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

A look back on David Bowie's life and career
Lots of good songs over the years. Sad that he's now passed away.

A couple friends and I wrote down a list of song titles we knew by David Bowie from memory without looking anything up yesterday. We came up with a list of 18 songs. We agreed that our favorite was Under Pressure. That's the song that Bowie did with Queen. We played the song on YouTube a few minutes later and we all wound up crying. It's the terror of knowing what this world is about... RIP DAVID BOWIE.
