Sturgill Simpson - Turtles All The Way Down
Sounds like a typical country song at first, but then listen to the lyrics and the trip begins.

I've seen Jesus play with flames
In a lake of fire that I was standing in
Met the devil in Seattle
And spent nine months inside the lions den
Met Buddha yet another time
And he showed me a glowing light within
But I swear that God is there
Every time I glare into the eyes of my best friend
Says my son, "It's all been done
And someday you're gonna wake up old and gray
So go and try to have some fun
Showing warmth to everyone
You meet and greet and cheat along the way"
There's a gateway in our minds
That leads somewhere out there, far beyond this plane
Where reptile aliens made of light
Cut you open and pull out all your pain
Tell me how you make illegal
Something that we all make in our brain
Some say you might go crazy
But then again, it might make you go sane
Every time I take a look
Inside that old and fabled book
I'm blinded and reminded of
The pain caused by some old man in the sky
Marijuana, LSD
Psilocybin, and DMT
They all changed the way I see
But love's the only thing that ever saved my life
So don't waste your mind on nursery rhymes
Or fairy tales of blood and wine
It's turtles all the way down the line
So to each their own 'til we go home
To other realms our souls must roam
To and through the myth that we all call space and time

mrgreen: That song shoots itself in the foot, but in the process does a somewhat intriguing little jig. Nothing impressive, but definitely not what you normally get in a country song. What we have is a song delivered with the complete earnestness of a halfwit country song combined with the psychedelic lyrics of some hippie burnout rock n roll ode to the joys of taking drugs. It's the lack of irony which kills the song, but gives it the initial appearance of being an ordinary country song. So, yeah, it's an improvement over ordinary country crap, but ultimately remains metaphysically naive and that would be okay if there was some sort of self-aware irony in the delivery of the song and as a result the singer and the song come across as a bit smug. Nevertheless, if I have time I'll listen to some other songs by this guy to see if there's a quirk in his personality which might change my initial impression of this song.

mrgreen: That song is alright, but it just seems like a dumbed down version of this Neil Young song to me. It's more wordy, but often when things are dumbed down more words are used to make things simple and easily digested by the less intelligent among us. That said, it's not a bad song.

This one belongs on the Essential Country Classics list if ever a song has, did or does!

mrgreen: That's a very engaging song, but the ideas disintegrate upon even a cursory inspection. The premise seems to be that objective reality is complicated and that the human mind cannot grasp it sufficiently well and so therefore we should go down the rabbit hole of subjectivity to achieve some kind of enlightenment. Not very smart or astute. If we have difficulty agreeing on objective reality, then obviously subjective reality will be something that we have even less agreement on. The illusion that drugs lead to enlightenment is highly attractive, but an extremely insidious illusion which may yield brief euphoria, but which ultimately can only have bad long term consequences.

CONVOY 01 CW McCall - Convoy ORIGINAL VERSION
This might be one of the worst songs ever written, but it was awful damn popular back in the 1970s.

Walker Hayes - Fancy Like
Here's one that's popular with the little kiddies on TikTok. There's an awful lot of eating going on in this song. It's almost like this bozo is trying to get sponsored by every fastfood place in the country! Talk about a song written in support of consumerism!

Will the Fetus Be Aborted? - Jello Biafra and Mojo Nixon
From the lyrics:
Little Mary was just eleven
And she was raped by her own dad

Sounds like something that has happened in Trona more than just a few times!

Jason Aldean "Dirt Road Anthem" (Official Parody) "Road Head Anthem" by Xander Kane
Funny parody of one of the cheesiest country songs ever. Just the same, I'm not sure if getting head while driving on a dirt road is such a great idea. Dirt roads tend to be bumpy and well - you get the idea and if you don't, then it don't really matter!
