U2 Joshua Tree Location

I'm reposting this from the old forum since it's pretty useful. I followed these directions and they worked! Cactusoid wrote:
For those of you who don't want to mess around with the GPS BS, I heard it's right around the 33rd mile marker on the south side of the highway. Can anyone confirm this?

That's correct! I visited the U2 Joshua Tree this last week and it's about three-tenths of a mile south of the 33rd mile marker. There's a good pull out for parking about 150 yards before the 33rd mile marker, BTW. Also, FYI, the markers on the south side of the highway are marked in miles like this: 33.0, 34.0, etc. The markers on the north side of the highway are marked in half miles like this: 33.5, 32.5, etc. The numbers get smaller as you travel towards Lone Pine.

For the sake of clarity, the parking spot is 150 yards west of the marker and on the south side of highway 190.

I've seen people parked in that area several times. I never seem to be able to spot them wandering around out in the desert looking for the markers. It makes me wonder if they ever find what they're looking for!

I saw a group of four cars stopped along the road at the right place to check out the U2 monument, but the only people I was able to spot were on the wrong side of the road. I have a feeling that they did not find what they were looking for.

Yeah, but from what I've heard there's not much to see any more. It was kind of neat at one point, but now there's not much left.

I wouldn't be surprised if the snow level has dropped down low enough to cover the old U2 memorial. The Darwin Plateau is mostly around 5000 feet and I haven't heard that the snow got down that low. If not this last one, maybe the next one.

mrfish: You're right there's not a lot to see, but it's still on the to do list of a bunch of tourists passing through the area. I think just the idea that they stood where the band stood just before the release of one of their most popular albums is enough to send chills through the spines of hardcore U2 fans. Doesn't do anything for me, but I've known a few people who speak almost reverently of U2.

sj: Hardcore fans are also likely to be thrilled to death to sit on the same toilet as any one of the band members. People like that are like little children when it comes to hero worship, but it certainly is the case that there are people like that so I guess you're right.

U2's Joshua Tree Location
The song is an okay song and the album isn't terrible, but it just ain't what I'm looking for!

recluse: That's about how I feel too. I don't dislike any of the U2 songs I've heard, but I've never been at all impressed by their music either. Still it's kind of neat that a local Joshua tree made it on the cover of an album by a famous band.

The rumor I heard is that there is very little left of this landmark. It may even have gotten to the point where it's going to be cleaned up and basically removed. There aren't too many hardcore fans fo U2 left and so interest in the site has decreased a lot in the last several years. I think the site can be properly characterized as a small pile of junk at this point and so I don't see it being around much longer.
